Lead and zinc work: the details that make a roof watertight

Where a roof surface ends or meets something else, the water has to be guided: along the chimney, around the dormer, through the valley gutter and via the gutter to the downpipe. That is the job of lead and zinc.

These are small surfaces, but this is where most leaks start. We renew and repair lead and zinc work with an eye for detail.

Where it often goes wrong

  • Lead flashings that have cracked or come out of the joint
  • Zinc gutters with leaking soldered seams
  • Gutters that sag and hold standing water
  • Valley gutters overflowing with leaves and dirt
  • White or green staining on the facade below the gutter

Approach

How we tackle it

  1. Survey and measure

We assess what can be repaired and what needs replacing, and measure up the work.

  2. Made to measure

Zinc and lead are made to measure and fitted with room for expansion. Lengths that are too long without expansion joints will crack.

  3. Finish and test

We check the fall of the gutter and how the downpipes drain before we hand over.

Costs

What determines the price?

We do not quote amounts here: without a survey of your roof that would be guesswork. The quote itemises the costs, so you can see what the total is made up of.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about lead and zinc work

Lead or a lead substitute?

Lead is durable and easy to shape. Lead substitutes are lighter and lead-free; they are used more and more, for example where rainwater is collected. We discuss what suits your roof.

How long does a zinc gutter last?

A properly fitted zinc gutter lasts for decades. Standing water, leaf debris and contact with bitumen or copper shorten its life.

Can a leaking gutter be repaired?

A loose seam or a small hole can often be soldered. If the zinc has worn thin along the whole length, replacing it is the better choice.
