Roof insulation: warmer in winter, cooler in summer
Heat rises. That makes a poorly insulated roof one of the biggest leaks in a home. Good insulation saves on heating costs and makes the top floor pleasant all year round.

The best moment is when the roof is being opened anyway. Then we insulate from the outside, without you losing any space inside.
When does insulation pay off?
- The attic or top floor is cold in winter and hot in summer
- Snow melts on your roof faster than on your neighbours’
- Your roof is being renovated or re-covered anyway
- You want a better energy label or to move away from gas
Approach
How we tackle it
Pitched roof from the outside
During a renovation we lay insulation boards on the roof boarding. Nothing changes inside; the roof does become slightly higher.
Pitched roof from the inside
If the roof covering stays in place, insulation can be fitted between or against the rafters, with a vapour control layer on the warm side.
Flat roof
On a flat roof the insulation goes on top of the structure, under the new roof covering. This is called a warm roof and prevents condensation in the build-up.
Costs
What determines the price?
We do not quote amounts here: without a survey of your roof that would be guesswork. The quote itemises the costs, so you can see what the total is made up of.

- The required insulation value and the material
- Adjustments to roof edges, gutters and roof windows because of the extra height
- Whether the work coincides with new roof covering
Frequently asked questions
Questions about roof insulation
What insulation value do I need?
The insulation value is expressed as Rd: the higher, the better. For a grant there is a minimum value set by the scheme. We advise a value that suits your home and the space available.
Can I get a grant for roof insulation?
There is a national scheme (ISDE) for homeowners. The conditions change regularly and sometimes a second energy-saving measure is required. The current rules are on rvo.nl; some municipalities also have their own schemes.
Do I need to ventilate after insulating?
Yes. A well-insulated house also holds on to moisture more. Enough ventilation and a correctly placed vapour control layer prevent condensation and mould in the roof structure.
