Tiled roofs: repairing and renewing pitched roofs
A tiled roof lasts a long time, but it is made of more than tiles. The underlay, the tiling battens, the ridge and the valleys together determine whether the roof stays watertight.
We replace tiles, renew ridges and valleys and lay complete new tiled roofs, with clay or concrete tiles.
What we often find on tiled roofs
- Tiles that have shifted or broken after a storm
- Porous tiles that absorb water and flake
- Ridge tiles that have come loose because the mortar has weathered
- Valleys with cracked lead or zinc
- Sagging or rotten tiling battens
Approach
How we tackle it
Inspection from tile to underlay
We lift tiles in a number of places to assess the tiling battens and the underlay.
Repair or replacement
Local damage is repaired with matching tiles. If the roof is worn out, we renew the underlay, counter battens, tiling battens and tiles.
Ridge, valleys and joints
We lay the ridge in a ventilated dry-fix system or in mortar, whichever suits the roof. Valleys and joints are finished in lead or zinc.

What determines the price?
We do not quote amounts here: without a survey of your roof that would be guesswork. The quote itemises the costs, so you can see what the total is made up of.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about tiled roofs
How long do roof tiles last?
Concrete tiles generally last thirty to fifty years, clay tiles often longer. The underlay and tiling battens regularly need replacing before the tiles themselves do.
Can my old tiles go back on the roof?
If they are not porous and still fit well: yes. That saves money and keeps the look of the house. We assess this per roof and add matching tiles where needed.
Clay or concrete?
Clay tiles keep their colour better and last longer; concrete tiles are cheaper and heavier. When replacing, we also look at what the structure can carry and what suits the street.
